PE & GAMES

At Oakwood, we believe that many character strengths are built on the sports field: sportsmanship, self-confidence, self-discipline and the ability to work as a team.

Our five key objectives for sport are: participation, development, enjoyment, understanding the body and living a healthy lifestyle.

In the Early Years, the focus of lessons is to develop fine motor skills, agility, balance, coordination and confidence, through a range of sports and gymnastics. From Year 1, children are introduced to individual and team sports (tennis, swimming, football, netball, rugby, hockey, cricket) and begin to learn rules of play.

In Years’ 3-6, sport is split into PE lessons and Games lessons. In PE lessons all our children take part in dance, gymnastics, creative games, swimming and our own ‘Oakwood Super Stars’ fitness challenge. In Games lessons ‘Sport for all’ is our approach and each child is given an opportunity to play team sports and compete against local schools through fixtures and tournaments. The sports played are football, netball, rugby, hockey, cricket, athletics and cross country running.

Outdoor junior games are played on our large playing fields which includes football and rugby pitches and two cricket squares. Our multi use games area is expected to complete in early 2022.

We encourage all children to take part in sports clubs and we provide a wide range of extra-curricular clubs which are very popular, including: Gymnastics, Table tennis, Multi-Sports, Football and Netball.
